Dry Dock Cafe
my perspective |
After learning that we were deserted on this side with no ETA to return by ferry, we decided to settle down in the only place that was open. It was a mix of a pub/bar, and cafe. The other places were all closed. THe outside and the name were a bit deceiving, it is called "Dry Dock Cafe"
Screenshot from Google Maps |
It was too cold and windy to take a picture, so I took a screenshot from Google Maps... as you can see, this is what it looks like on the outside.
They are proud of LSU :)
Nothing can change our mood! We are cheering with Coffee! (The coffee was really good <3)
This is from Aerin's phone
Aerin's perspective |
Coffee |
The waitress/server at this establishment was not used to serving people who were not locals, she wasn't rude, she just didn't know how to show genuine hospitality, like most in New Orleans, she was fair but firm.
This is from my perspective
Coffee!!! :D
This coffee was really good... by the time we found and got into this place, the wind made it feel quite cold outside. I was thankful for this coffee, it kept me warm.
We were fascinated with the salt and pepper shakers (do you see anything cool about them?). They have handles!
I liked the 'old' newspaper advertisements, though, I questioned how old they are (given by some of their listed prices).
Aerin and discussed, perhaps the reason why this side of New Orleans is less developed and vibrant than the main, French side is because of the natural inconveniences, I mean... how can a town properly be developed when something as simple (and as frequent) as the wind can get into its way of being accessible?
Despite the inconveniences, this place was an adventure in itself.

Back onto the Ferry... except, no, we can't
Ferry Boarding time! We were excited to get on the ferry and get back to the French Quarters
There was a small beach
Close up of the sign (they are a bit different from the pictograms we are used to)
There was a line... everyone was waiting for the ferry to arrive :)
Is it just me, or is this yellow a bit too bright?
The walk was definitely a lot longer than we thought it would be (it felt shorter on the way up)
Aerin took a picture of me :) It was windy (but you can't tell from this photo), This was taken before we got the "bad news"
The bad news is that we couldn't take the ferry to get back, it was too windy, and the ferries aren't able to go back to the French Quarters... :( all ferry services have been cancelled due to the strong winds.

today's lunch
Beef organs/offals with noodles! yum! :D |
We finally got to go out to eat today! This is what we got (we shared everything)
fried noodles with pork |
I love the crispiness of these noodles <3
Congee with fish slices and pork kidney/liver |
This congee was very well made. The fish slices and pork kidney/livers were cooked to perfection

Louis Armstrong Memorial Trail
We came across the Louis Armstrong Historical Monument which marks the start of the Jazz trail. It was windy but such a beautiful day <3
It was about a 20-minute walk, you can go further, but we thought it was enough :) Especially given how windy it was
Hi French Quarters! |
This light post (and others) gave tributes to different bands and Jazz musicians for their contributions to Jazz and New Orleans Jazz music
we walked along the shoreline |
The memorial walk parallels the Mississippi river
huge ships |
Some parts along the trail haven't been properly developed yet.
We think this trail/memorial walk is newly built given how clean and sturdy it felt (compared to the other parts of Old Algier)

Algier's Point & Old Algier's
We didn't read about Algier's Point, so we decided to walk around and just see what came up. It was a very small town, so we did some exploring. Since it was such a beautiful (but windy) day we didn't mind just walking around.
Hi French Quarters! |
The ambiance is very different than what we were used to the past few days. It was quite nice getting out of the city and into a smaller town
We were in awe of just how different it is here compared to the French Quarters and financial districts.
Unlike, the French Quarters and Financial districts (where we stayed and where we spent the past few days), this town was quiet, and still in the process of being redeveloped.
We were fascinated by how big the porch of this house was. It is very Southern (for our not so southern selves).

Old Algiers
We are on the other side! Old Algiers was founded in 1719! It is New Orleans best kept secret.
We docked at Algiers Point, and did some exploring :)
