Remembrance Day/Memorial Day

Now, more than ever, we are reminded of the blessing of being in peace. On this day, Remembrance Day/Memorial Day, we reflect on the privilege most have taken for granted, a peaceful world.

It is heartbreaking to see so much conflict happening around the world.

When I was still in school, I was forced to memorize this poem every year for Remembrance Day, and now, as the wars are becoming more intense, this poem speaks so much more to me than before. Please take a moment to reflect on each word and what it means to you.

original handwritten version

In Flanders Fields

by John McCrae 1919

In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Hong Kong... a place of memories

Victoria Harbour night view

Hong Kong will always be my favourite city in the world. It was the place where I went on my first date and the place where my grandparents lived. It was the place where I found comfort in when I was given a lot of burdens. It was the place I felt accepted when I encountered a lot of racism in Toronto.

taken from my Instagram

It was a city I learned that it was ok to be creative and a place where everyone had a voice. It's a city I am most proud of... it is one of my homes.

Hong Kong <3

I continue to hope that Hong Kong will continue to thrive despite all the difficulties it is going through. I hope it will not fall into the trap of being a city only known for having brands... but a city with substance... +oil!

Slides

rainbow from TeamLab Borderless
It has been a long time since I have been on a slide and I was on one today (after some encouragement from Rachel)... I felt like a kid having to not worry about falling off... it is interesting how I can have the same feeling as a grown up. 😀 I was able to laugh during and after :D

Countdown

Olympic Building at Toyosu... taken a few too many days ago

While I am well aware the counter on the building is counting down to the Tokyo Olympics... I am also aware it might also be a countdown for me...

The Olympic building at Toyosu

who knows what the future holds? (except God... but He doesn't count) I wonder when this countdown hits 555 or 222 or even 0 where will I be, what would be my experiences?

At 777 I am definitely happy. Happy that I have lots of new beginnings, happy that I finally have a sort of a dream job, sad that I will be leaving my students... but overall, I am happy :)

little things

random "garbage" on the floor a piece of my hairbrush fell off

have you ever dropped something but because you couldn't pick it up (either you couldn't find it or you were rushing out) and later only to discover it when you stump on it?

It happens to be EVERY TIME!!!!! it is so annoying!!!! No matter where it was dropped (behind the sink, rolled under my bed... it always finds itself to my feet!!! I always regret not picking it up right away... (not that I didn't want to).... sigh...

please don't tell me I'm not the only one who experiences this...

It's gotta be 12 o'clock somewhere in the world...

Clock Tower in TST Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong,

Earworm of the day: When I fall in Love - Brian McKnight and Celine Dion

While I was getting a certain update from a game... I realized just how big this world is... currently, as I'm writing, it is 9:18pm in Tokyo... and then it occurred to me... it's gotta be noon or midnight somewhere in this world...

a watch

it never fails to amaze me just how big and at the same time, how small this world is. With the aid of technology, we are able to connect with people who are very different from us, some choose to beat the time with their own efforts so they can be in control with how time is defined...yet we cannot run from the fact that they are geographically so far from us.

One example is China. China only has one time zone and it is calibrated to Beijing's "time zone", yet with the width of the country, there should be at least... 3-4 time zones. I wonder how those in the West side of China feel especially during winter time when it is still so dark, yet it reads 8:00am on their watches.

a matter of perception

a Japanese store in Asakusa

Psychology tells us that we tend to instantly associate with things which are familiar to us. The Bible proved this when Judas (who eventually betrays Jesus) pointed his finger at when he thought he was going to betray Jesus, in fact, it turns out in the end, he was the one who betrays Jesus.

A simple picture with a person with a backpack and most who are still going to school will assume that the person is a student, while those who have long left school only see a person standing there.

spices? herbs? no? Japanese rice cracker snacks! shocked!

I guess you understand what I am trying to say here. The reason I am saying this is I have just experienced this with my friend the other day.

It all began a few nights ago when we were talking about the difficulties of finding herbs in Tokyo. And while walking in Asakusa, we saw a shop from a distance and said "herb shop"! We were really excited only to be disappointed when we got near enough to discover that these are not herbs... they are traditional Japanese Rice Snacks...

What did you think they were?

blogging is one of my hobbies

blogger stats
stats!

I love blogging! (I know I have said it many times and it probably isn't a secret anymore, but this is the fact, I really like blogging, something very attractive about putting your thoughts into words and seeing them on a page.

While I like Facebook, it is hard to track what I have written and Facebook isn't even made for writing... it is sharing and reconnecting with people.

I used to love writing in diaries but I write super slow, and sometimes, by the time I can start writing one thought, the rest disappear.

Blogging is great, I can search for posts and I can write my thoughts down quickly. 😇I also love reading what I wrote years ago and see how much I have grown :) I also love the fact I can find my posts on google :)

I know I take hiatus here and there but I don't plan to leave... I'm hoping that I can write more... because journaling helps us track our thoughts and helps us think better.

World Cup Belgium vs. Japan thoughts

The Belgium vs. Japan match has got to be one of the most intense and most interesting games so far at the Russia World Cup 2018. For most, if not, throughout the whole game, my eyes were literally glued to the screen.

I was impressed with how serious and skillful the players were. I'm proud of both sides.

I really liked what the commenter said in regards to the goal which qualified Belgium and disqualified Japan to the next stage was done brilliantly.

"...was Japan the victim of their own corner kick when they sent so many players forward looking to win it themselves?"

Just moments before the winning goal... Japan was at an advantage, and even the commenter said:
"Japan score here, Belgium['s] going home"

And then, it took a turn... Belgium made use of the opportunity (when Japan did not score) to their favour.

This made me think, has there ever been a time in my life where I was so sure that things were going my way only to realize in the end I didn't get anything because I was too confident?

Confidence is good... and sometimes things seem to go a certain way thinking we would get it... but we can never be 100% sure... there are so many things that can happen to change everything in an instant.

(might write a more detailed reflection later)

travel tips (Japan)

money from different parts of the world... how many do you recognize?

If there is one thing I can get used to in Japan is that I do not have to pay any tips!!!!... in fact, it is considered offensive to give tips.

I read some where if you give tips you are showing what bad service they had provided (yes, this is weird) and that you believe they were only working for money (which is why you give them money to offend them).

If you give tips, the server will be very confused and refuse.

Seriously... if there is one thing I don't miss about Toronto AND New York is the tipping system @.@v

Welcome to my world...

It has been almost a year since I placed fingers on a piano... The moment I sat on the bench and touched the piano keys, I got a nostalgic feeling... Like seeing an old friend. When I began playing, the pressure I had to use to produce a sound felt so familiar to the touch.

As I continued onto the piece, my eyes started to tear up... I almost forgot about the emotions that form when I play. I enter a world which allows me to fantasize and lets my soul flow with the music notes. I can choose how the music sounds depending on my mood... The more I play the song, the more I can express myself...

I can enter a fantasy where the music guides me soul to the sounds... My thoughts and soul runs with the music and aligns with each note.

I invite you to my world of wonders...

Piano playing is like riding a bike, once you learn, you will not forget.

Earthquakes

I was woken up by an earthquake today.

It made me realize just how fortunate and blessed I am to not have fear for my life.

Now that I have lived in Tokyo for a year now, I can't say I have gotten used to earthquakes but it has definitely changed me.

A place I call home does not have a lot of earthquakes

I pray for hose whose lives have been interrupted by the tsunami... please pray for them.

I'm Canadian?

This is how you know you are Canadian: You are sweating like crazy and fanning yourself while others are wearing sweaters and starting at you like you are crazy (and THIS is how you know Stephanie is very busy... When she keeps procrastinating and writing random posts XD

Surgical masks

If you have been around Japan during February to April, it would be hard to miss all these masks on everyone's faces!

There are a few reasons:
  1. Hanafuze (Allergies... or more commonly known as "Hay Fever" in Japan)
  2. Dry skin or skin allergies (changes in the humidity and terrible heating systems)
  3. Some want to prevent other's germs from spreading and do not want to get sick
  4. Some are sick and considerate enough to not spread their germs by wearing a mask

So the next time you see someone in Japan (or even in Asia) with a mask you will know :)

new JR Yamanote Line trains!!

So usually I don't get excited over new trains... but the JR Yamanote line new trains are too impressive...

I have been seeing these on the JR railways for quite some time but I haven't had a chance to get on them. These are the new JR Yamanote Line trains!!

I love the interface and the wide screens over the old square screens and the interface is so appealing :P And since it is Yamanote Line, the trains were all very green looking (including seats and handles etc).

One bad thing about them is that their handrails gets scratched and dirty so easily :(...
I'm so glad I got to get a "first taste" of these trains because they still have that new smell to them XD

hair cut!! :D

Stephanie's new hair cut! Stephanie Ng
new hair cut! :D

In this post, I would talk a bit about hair salons in Japan (actually... the hair salon that I went to in Tokyo!). I went to Lite Hair Gotanda

Similar to my post about "Fast Pace" everything in this city is about fast!... The salon I went to had a time beside each service so the client can determine how long it would take for them to complete each step.

First, I want to comment just how cheap it is to get a hair cut in Tokyo. For Shampoo (¥500) + Cut (¥2000) it was only ¥2500 (taxes have already been included and no tips!)!!! I was shocked! It was so cheap and affordable! I was quite happy with the service too.

The hair stylist was very friendly and was very efficient.

So now, let's talk about the time it took... (Shampoo + cutting + styling) 30 mins!... I was only half way done reading my magazine and they told me that my hair cut was done!

Why am I in Japan?

I am currently on the train, so please excuse me if there are any typos or grammatical errors.

sakura cherry blossoms 桜 さくら
taken from my house...

why am I here... what is my purpose?
I have gotten this question many MANY times...

unfortunately, I don't have the answer... I'll be very honest, I really don't know...

How I see it is, instead of worrying and wondering why... I choose to enjoy this place... try to get as much out of it as possible... because I don't even know how long I will even be here...

All I care is I'm enjoying life... perhaps this is the purpose in itself... why must I seek the purposes if I am already living that purpose?

representing Canadians

listening to: Jay Chou (please excuse any typos/errors...)

So after 4 people from 4 different countries (Chicago, NY, Australia and UK) have commented about my Canadian accent, I feel the need to write it here in my blog. These all happened in 4 different occasions:

K from Chicago: Wow... you are definitely Canadian, I haven't heard a Torontonian accent in a long time... especially the way you say "Toronto"

D from NY: yes! That's how you know she's from Toronto, the way she pronounces Toronto...

E from Australia: ... it's so obvious you are from North America... the US or Canada... that accent

S from UK: hahaha... say that again? You are so Canadian... just like my Canadian friend...

HAHA... these comments make me very self conscious of the way I speak... do I really sound THAT Canadian (more specifically Torontonian)?. I am afraid to say the word "Toronto" now... -_____-||

A new place

Shibuya Miyamasusaka 宮益坂、渋谷

All my life I have spoken English like how I know it... I can recognize the Southern American accent and the UK/Australian accent (till now I can't fully distinguish it... sorry to all my British/English and Australian friends >___<).

The reason why I decided to write these thoughts down is not to show you how "Canadian" or "Torontonian" I am... but rather... it is a wake up call for me... it finally hits me that I am no longer in Canada... where everyone speaks English with the same accent as I do... it's not a place where people have a similar background as I do... I am in a foreign place... a place where if I speak/act/think... I leave an impression on others about Canadians... . I can relate to them... I have met people from different countries (side note: my church has over 52 nationalities) and they are and most probably be the only one I will meet from their country/city/town... whatever they do influences my impression on people from their countries..

As I am still learning to adjust to this new place... I come across new and fascinating things every day... and today... this is what I discovered. As I meet new friends and students... they not only see me as "Stephanie Ng", but also as a "Canadian", "Hong Konger/ese", and "Torontontian".
